Made in Zanzibar CD:
Zanzibar is a beautiful island off the coast of East Africa. Sweet songs of love waft through the sultry air, emanating from the carved wooden doorwarys of ancient stone houses. This music, called Taarab, was strongly influenced by Egypt when it was under Ottoman rule.
The Sultans began sending musicians to Zanzibar to study in the 1870's. Most of the instruments played today were brought from Egypt long ago. Over time, Zanzibari musicians have created their own tropical, East African flavor.
"Made in Zanzibar" is an experimental project, a bridge between East and West.
Inspired by her early years of show business when she would dance to both classical and Arabic music, Tamalyn Dallal gave a cd containing several of her favorite songs to Matona, and asked him to use them as inspiration for music that she could dance to. He included three songs from Zanzibar's golden age, added an ancient Arabic song from pre-inquisition Spain, and vituoso Arabic style instrumental solos and "Made in Zanzibar" was born.
